Coco Gauff powered past compatriot Jessica Pegula 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday to claim the Wuhan Open title, securing the third WTA 1000 trophy of her career in an all-American final.
The 19-year-old third seed won the match in 1 hour and 42 minutes without dropping a set throughout the tournament, becoming the first player in the Open Era to win her first nine hard-court finals.
In a clash between former doubles partners, Gauff overcame multiple deficits in a tense second set to notch her third win in seven career meetings against Pegula.
Gauff stormed out of the blocks, winning the first six points and racing to a 3-0 lead. Pegula responded with a fierce backhand to break back in the seventh game and level the set at 4-4. But Gauff regained control and secured the opener in 47 minutes.
Pegula, who had come from 2-5 down in her deciding set against world number one Aryna Sabalenka the previous day, showed her resilience again in the second set. The sixth seed broke Gauff twice to lead 3-0, capitalising on six double faults from her opponent.
However, Gauff, who has been working on her serve with biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan since late August, regrouped and clawed her way back. She broke twice to level, and despite another exchange of breaks, surged to win 10 consecutive points and swing the momentum firmly in her favour.
Pegula saved one match point but sent a volley wide on the second, prompting Gauff to raise her arms in triumph.
While Pegula had battled through three-set matches in all eight of her previous encounters leading to the final, Gauff dropped just 16 games all week, underlining her growing dominance on hard courts.
