Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) marked World Veterinary Day 2026 with rallies, discussions, exhibitions and free veterinary care services, highlighting the role of veterinarians in food safety, public health and animal welfare.
The event was held on Saturday at the Gazipur campus, organised by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science with support from Army Pharma, Century, Navana Pharma, Gentry Pharma, Incepta, Chemist, Abon Pharma and Breeze Bio-science BD.
The programme centred on this year’s theme, “Veterinarians Guardians of Food and Health,” underscoring the profession’s contribution to food security, research and disease control.
The day began with a rally involving teachers, students, officers and staff, followed by a discussion session chaired by Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science Dean Professor Md Taimur Islam.
Gazipur Agricultural University Treasurer Professor Md Safiul Islam Afrad attended as chief guest and emphasised the need to strengthen veterinary education, research and technological capacity. He also reiterated the university’s commitment to upgrading its Veterinary Teaching Hospital and laboratories to international standards.
Gazipur Agricultural University Director of Student Welfare Professor Mohammad Sharif Raihan and Director of Veterinary Teaching Hospital Professor Anup Kumar Talukder joined as special guests.
The session opened with a welcome address by Veterinary Teaching Hospital Associate Director Professor Ziban Chandra Das.
As part of the second phase of the programme, the chief guest inaugurated a free veterinary treatment and vaccination campaign, providing services to farmers and livestock owners from different parts of Gazipur.
Faculty members and students treated more than 300 animals and birds during the day, reflecting the university’s focus on community-based veterinary services.
Guests also visited poster exhibitions highlighting sustainable veterinary practices, disease prevention and innovation in animal health, alongside student-led stalls displaying feed and veterinary products.
World Veterinary Day has been observed globally since 2000 on the last Saturday of April to recognise the contribution of veterinarians worldwide.
