A mobile court jailed four people for 10 days each for hunting and killing wild rabbits in Chuadanga.

Law enforcers also rescued six dead and five live rabbits during the operation.

The hunters trapped the rabbits before killing them with sharp weapons, while the live ones were later released into the forest.

The mobile court was conducted at Keru and Company’s field in Titudah village under Chuadanga Sadar upazila on Thursday night.

The convicts are Jhenaidah Sadhuhati village Ujjwal Kumar Biswas, Sadhuhati Enayetpur village Sadgar Ali, the same village Sukumar Mondal, and Sudhanshu Kumar Biswas.

According to officials, a group of 14 to 16 hunters from Jhenaidah arrived in Titudah earlier in the day and set traps in different parts of the field.

Six rabbits were killed after being caught, while five were kept alive.

The incident came to light after a zoology lecturer informed the forest department.

Members of the Titudah police camp, the forest department, and Bangladesh Wildlife and Nature Initiative later conducted a drive and detained four suspects, while others fled.

Chuadanga Sadar Upazila Assistant Commissioner Land Aminul Islam conducted the mobile court and handed down the sentences under the wildlife conservation law.

The convicts were sent to Chuadanga district jail under police custody the same night.

Chuadanga Sadar Upazila Forest Officer Abul Khayer Ata and members of local wildlife organisations were present during the operation.
