Former Paraguay goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert has caused controversy after suggesting Paraguay would be facing “a squad from Africa” rather than France in their World Cup round of 16 meeting in Philadelphia on 4 July.
The 60 year old shared a screenshot on social media of comments attributed to former French forward Christophe Dugarry, who had suggested Paraguay would be heavily beaten by France in the tie. Responding to the post, Chilavert wrote, “Christophe, you’re right. In 1998 we faced the French and now PY will face a squad from Africa.”
Dugarry was part of the France squad that won the 1998 World Cup, beating Paraguay 1-0 in the round of 16 on their way to lifting the trophy on home soil.
