Police have arrested Rafiqul Alam, a former mayor of Khagrachhari municipality and a member of the district Awami League, from Dhaka.
Police said Rafiqul Alam had been absconding and was considered a fugitive Awami League leader.
He was arrested at around 5:30pm on Thursday from a residential house in the capital, according to police.
Police said Rafiqul Alam faces a total of 47 cases, including murder charges, filed at different police stations in Khagrachhari.
Following 5 August, he went into hiding and had been changing locations while staying in Chattogram and Dhaka, police added.
Khagrachhari Superintendent of Police Mirza Sayem Mahmud said a team from Bhatara police station in Dhaka carried out the arrest.
