Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the assault of a police officer following a dispute over a vehicle collision in Dhaka’s Gulshan area.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Morshed Alam, Md Billal Hossain, Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, Swapan Sarkar, and Sifat Yunus Lelin.
The incident took place on Wednesday night on a bridge within the Hatirjheel project area, located behind Gulshan Police Plaza.
The victim, Mahfuzzaman Sarkar, serves as an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in the Diplomatic Security Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
According to police reports, ADC Mahfuzzaman Sarkar was returning home after completing his duty when a heated argument broke out with a group of individuals regarding a vehicle-related matter behind Police Plaza.
During the confrontation, the individuals launched a sudden attack on the officer, leaving him severely injured.
Police rescued Mahfuzzaman from the scene and hospitalised him. The injured officer required 17 stitches for his wounds and is currently receiving treatment at United Hospital in the capital.
Golam Mortuza, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatirjheel Police Station, stated that the attackers did not appear to have any political identity and were intoxicated at the time of the assault.
A case has been filed at the Hatirjheel Police Station regarding the incident. While the five arrested individuals are currently in police custody, the OC confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to identify and locate others involved in the attack.
