Former inspector general of police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun filed an appeal on Monday seeking acquittal from the five-year imprisonment handed down to him in a crimes against humanity case.
The appeal followed the verdict delivered on 17 November by International Crimes Tribunal-1, which sentenced Mamun to five years’ imprisonment after he turned state witness in the case.
The tribunal found him guilty of crimes against humanity committed during the July–August 2024 uprising. However, it considered his cooperation and full disclosure of information during the trial.
A three-member bench of ICT-1 stated in its judgment that Mamun had disclosed all circumstances within his knowledge regarding the crimes. As the third accused in the case, he avoided the death penalty after becoming a state witness and instead received a five-year jail term. He is the first accused to turn state witness since the tribunal’s establishment in 2010.
In the same verdict, the tribunal sentenced ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death, holding them guilty of murder and serious human rights violations during the uprising.
