Australia secured the Ashes in Adelaide with two matches to spare, but attention has already shifted to team balance for the fourth Test in Melbourne after captain Pat Cummins suggested he may step aside for the remainder of the series.

Cummins, returning after a break of more than five months, led Australia to a commanding victory over England in the day-night Test, sealing the series at 3–0. With the urn retained and only formalities remaining, the fast bowler has indicated he could miss the Boxing Day Test at the MCG, prompting the team management to begin planning for his potential absence.

Australia played Brendan Doggett and Michael Neser earlier in the series before Cummins returned, and both are in contention to come back into the XI. The strongest push, however, is for Jhye Richardson, who has recovered from a shoulder injury and is waiting to be recalled to the Test squad.

Richardson trained with the squad ahead of the Adelaide Test but was not officially included. A recall would mark his return to the Test set-up almost a year after he was last named in a squad, for the Boxing Day Test against India. Since making his debut in the 2018–19 season, Richardson has played only three Tests, most recently in December 2021. Despite a career disrupted by injuries, he has taken 11 wickets at an average of 22.09.

Selection discussions are not limited to the pace attack. Steve Smith, who captained Australia in the first two Tests in Cummins’ absence, missed the Adelaide match through illness. Should he be fully fit, selectors are expected to consider his return for Melbourne.

Australia must also address the absence of Nathan Lyon, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the series through injury. Todd Murphy is currently the leading candidate to fill the spin role, while Western Australia left-armer Corey Rocchiccioli is pushing for a maiden call-up. Matt Kuhnemann, another left-arm spinner, is also in the frame after impressing on recent tours of Sri Lanka and the West Indies.

With the Ashes already decided, Australia have the luxury of managing workloads and experimenting with their resources, but selection for the Boxing Day Test will still carry significance as they look beyond this series.
