A five-year-old girl was killed after being struck by a speeding autorickshaw in Dhaka’s Kamrangirchar area.

The accident occurred at approximately 3pm on Wednesday in Lane No 7 of Sylheti Bazar as five-year-old Jannati was playing in front of her residence.

Witnesses reported that a fast-moving autorickshaw ran over her during the incident.

Jannati was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition, where the attending physician pronounced her dead at around 4:15pm.

According to the victim’s aunt, Nargis Akter, and a neighbour, Abu Salam, the child’s father, Md Mostafa works as a day labourer in Islambagh, while her mother, Lovely Akter, is a domestic worker.

At the time of the accident, Jannati was playing in the alley with other children while her mother was inside the house.

Nargis’s son reportedly carried her back into the house and informed the family that an autorickshaw had run over her before the driver fled the scene with his vehicle.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of DMCH Police Camp, confirmed the fatality based on information from the hospital’s doctors.

He stated that the body has been kept in morgue and the concerned police station has been notified to investigate the matter.
