At least five people, including a woman and a child, were killed after being run over by a speedy train in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district on Friday night.
The accident occurred around 8pm in the Dhalatengar area, police said.
The deceased were identified as Nargis, 35, wife of Hamidul Islam of Purab Nijpaga village under Sadullapur upazila in Gaibandha; her son Nirab, 11; Dola, 35, mother-in-law of her elder son; Sultan, 32, son of Raizel Mia; and Rifa, 25, daughter of Abdur Rashid.
All of them were residents of the same locality.
According to police and witnesses, the deceased were passengers of a bus operated by Diganta Paribahan, which had left Sadullapur upazila in Gaibandha at around 10am for Tangail.
The bus reportedly ran out of fuel near Dhalatengar at approximately 7:30pm, forcing it to stop by the roadside.
While the driver and his assistant went to collect fuel from a nearby pump, several passengers got down from the bus and waited in the surrounding area. Some passengers, including the victims, were sitting on a nearby railway track at the time.
A train traveling from Dhaka to Sirajganj passed through the area shortly afterward and struck the five individuals, killing them on the spot.
Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the Tangail Railway Station outpost confirmed the incident, saying legal procedures were underway and the bodies would be handed over to the victims’ families.
