Three people, including two women and a child, were killed after being run over by a train in the Arikhola area of Kaliganj upazila in Gazipur on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred along the Dhaka–Chattogram railway line when two trains were crossing at the same location.
The deceased were identified as Kamala Begum, 55, her granddaughter Anadi, 11, and a neighbour, Sadia Akter, 25. Police said they could not immediately provide further details about the victims.
Narsingdi Railway Police Outpost Sub-Inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar said Kamala Begum had been suffering from diabetes and other illnesses and had come to her daughter’s house for treatment.
He said Kamala Begum was walking along the railway line near the house with her granddaughter and neighbour at the time of the incident.
The Dhaka-bound Upakul Express and another train travelling from Chattogram to Dhaka were crossing at the spot when, due to inattention, the three were run over by one of the trains. Kamala Begum and Sadia Akter died on the spot.
The child Anadi was rescued in critical condition and taken to hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Bhairab Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Said Ahmed said police recovered the bodies from the scene and that legal proceedings were under way.
