Five more garment factories in Bangladesh have received green building certification, bringing the total number of eco-friendly factories in the country’s apparel and textile sector to 268.
The newly certified factories are Pakiza Knit Composite in Savar, Fashion Plus in Tongi BSCIC, Gava Private Limited in Dhaka EPZ, Visual Knitwears in Chattogram, and Talisman Performance Limited.
These certifications were awarded by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), which grants recognition based on specific sustainability standards.
Under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, factories scoring 80 or above receive LEED Platinum, 60–79 earn LEED Gold, 50–59 receive LEED Silver, and 40–49 are awarded LEED Certified.
Among the five newly certified factories, three – Pakiza Knit Composite, Fashion Plus, and Gava Private Limited – achieved LEED Platinum status. The remaining two – Visual Knitwears and Talisman Performance Limited – achieved LEED Gold certification.
Several organisations worldwide offer certifications for environmentally friendly buildings, with USGBC being one of the most recognized. Established in 1993, USGBC’s LEED certification requires factories to maintain high environmental standards from construction to production.
Of the 268 certified green factories in Bangladesh so far, 114 hold LEED Platinum status and 135 have received LEED Gold. Among the remaining, 12 are LEED Silver and 4 are LEED Certified.
