At least five people were killed and more than 60 others injured in three separate road accidents in Netrokona, Kushtia, and Gaibandha on Sunday.
In Netrokona
Three members of the same family, including a mother and her two daughters, were killed and three others seriously injured when a passenger bus crushed an auto-rickshaw in Netrokona Sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred around 11:30am at the Bypass intersection in the Challisha area on the Netrokona-Mymensingh Highway.
The deceased were identified as Noorjahan Begum, 40, and her daughters Smriti Akter, 16, and Iti Akter, 10, residents of Amli Keshabpur village in Netrokona Sadar.
According to eyewitness Babul Mia, a Mymensingh-bound bus coming from Netrokona collided with a passenger auto-rickshaw traveling from Shyamganj. One passenger died on the spot.
Locals rescued five others trapped beneath the bus and rushed them to Netrokona Sadar Hospital, where doctors declared a woman and a young girl dead.
Three injured victims are undergoing treatment at the hospital, while another critically injured person was referred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced care.
Netrokona Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Al Mamun Sarkar confirmed the incident, saying the bodies have been kept at the hospital and will be handed over to family members after the completion of legal procedures and post-mortem examinations.
In Kushtia
A head-on collision between a passenger bus and another bus carrying trainee army personnel left at least one person dead and more than 50 injured in Kushtia’s Mirpur upazila on Sunday afternoon.
The accident took place around 12pm near Talbaria Secondary School intersection.
Police and local sources said a bus carrying 39 trainee army personnel from Bogura to Khulna collided head-on with a passenger bus traveling from Kushtia to Tangail. Following the collision, both vehicles veered off the road and overturned on the roadside embankment.
One person was killed at the scene, while rescue operations were immediately launched by local residents, firefighters, and police personnel.
The injured were transported to Kushtia 250-Bed General Hospital.
Iqbal Hasan, acting residential medical officer of Kushtia General Hospital, said at least 32 injured people had been admitted to the hospital, while several others received primary treatment and were later released. Among the admitted patients, eight were women and the rest were men.
He added that army trainees accounted for the majority of the injured, although all are currently reported to be out of danger.
Mirpur Police Station OC Shahidul Islam said preliminary investigations suggest the accident may have occurred while one of the buses attempted to give way to a lychee-laden pickup van.
In Gaibandha
A woman was killed and at least six passengers, including a child, were injured after a passenger bus lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Gaibandha’s Palashbari upazila on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred in the Thutiyapukur area along the Gaibandha-Palashbari regional highway.
The deceased was identified as Rikta Begum, 28, wife of Aijol Haque of Sahar Bazar area in Gaibandha Sadar.
According to police and Fire Service officials, a bus of New Safa Paribahan traveling from Dhaka to Gaibandha lost control upon reaching the area and fell into a roadside ditch.
Rikta Begum was trapped beneath the vehicle and died on the spot.
At least six other passengers sustained injuries and were admitted to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex and Gaibandha General Hospital.
Pradip Kumar, investigation officer of Palashbari Police Station, said the victim’s body had been handed over to her family, while the injured were receiving treatment at various healthcare facilities.
In Faridpur
At least 25 passengers were injured when a Borak Paribahan bus traveling from Dhaka to Khulna lost control and overturned into a roadside ditch in Faridpur’s Nagarkanda upazila on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred near Jhatordia Bazar on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway. Local residents, firefighters, highway police, and law enforcement personnel carried out rescue operations and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
Nagarkanda Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rasul Samdani Azad said police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information about the accident and joined the rescue operation.
Traffic on the highway was briefly disrupted before returning to normal.
