A three-day state mourning has been declared from Wednesday following the death of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
Wednesday is the last day of 2025. Typically, many people celebrate the New Year’s eve by setting off fireworks, engaging in music and revelry, holding processions, and organising open-roof DJ parties. However, police have announced a ban on all such activities in Dhaka this year.
A public notification issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Tuesday stated that all types of fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, and gas balloons will be prohibited within the Dhaka metropolitan area from Wednesday until Friday.
During this period, no cultural programmes, DJ parties, rallies, or processions will be allowed in open spaces either. Additionally, DMP has announced that sounding vehicle horns at high volume or engaging in any activity that creates public disturbance will also be prohibited.
Khaleda Zia passed away at 6am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80 years old at the time of her death.
The government has declared a three-day state mourning across the country and a public holiday on Wednesday following her death. Khaleda Zia’s funeral prayers will be held at 2pm on Wednesday.
She will then be laid to eternal rest with state honours at 3:30pm in Chandrima Udyan, on the north side of Parliament, next to the grave of the late president Ziaur Rahman.
