A fire broke out at a building in the capital’s Mirpur area on Wednesday night after fireworks were set off in defiance of a restriction imposed by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
A video circulating on social media shows flames engulfing a section of a roadside building. The incident occurred in Mirpur-7, according to media reports.
The incident took place during a period of state mourning declared following the death of three-time former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. The government is observing state mourning from Wednesday to Friday.
On this occasion, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) issued a notification banning all types of fireworks, crackers, sky lanterns, and gas balloons across the city. The directive also prohibited organising cultural programmes, DJ parties, rallies, or processions in open spaces.
Despite the restrictions, fireworks, crackers, and sky lanterns were seen across different parts of the capital as people welcomed the New Year 2026. In several areas, fireworks were set off even before midnight, defying the police directive.
