Md Kamal Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Nachol, has been withdrawn from his post and appointed as a Special Officer on Duty (OSD) at the Ministry of Public Administration amid allegations that he falsified his family background to secure a job under the freedom fighter quota.
An official notification from the Ministry, signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Samiul Amin on Wednesday, confirmed that Kamal Hossain has been appointed OSD with immediate effect.
Efforts to reach Kamal Hossain on his official phone were unsuccessful.
Chapainawabganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Solaiman said, “I learned about this matter through the media. I have recently joined this district and have not yet visited all the upazilas. I will provide detailed information later.”
The controversy follows allegations that Hossain listed his uncle and aunt as his parents to gain benefits under the freedom fighter quota. On 4 November, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) decided to conduct DNA tests on Kamal Hossain and his family members to verify the claims.
ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain said that Kamal Hossain allegedly claimed his uncle, a recognised freedom fighter, as his father to gain quota-based advantages during the 35th BCS examination. Additional investigations are ongoing regarding his use of a fake freedom fighter certificate to secure employment and other privileges.
An ACC case against Hossain was filed on 26 December last year. Investigations revealed that during the BCS exam, Kamal Hossain listed Md Ahsan Habib, his uncle and a freedom fighter, and his aunt Sanoara Khatun as his parents instead of his biological parents, Md Abul Kashem and Habia Khatun.
Through this falsification, he allegedly secured university admission, government jobs, and other benefits.
Kamal Hossain, who currently serves as UNO of Nachol upazila, previously held positions as Senior Assistant Commissioner in the Magura Deputy Commissioner’s office and as UNO of Atrai Upazila in Naogaon.
The ACC has received court approval to conduct DNA tests on Kamal Hossain, his biological parents, and his uncle and aunt, which are expected to be completed soon.
