Bruno Fernandes produced a commanding individual display to lead Portugal to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chile at the Estadio Nacional on Saturday, though the friendly will be remembered as much for its flashpoints as its football after Rafael Leao and Chile’s Ivan Roman were both dismissed before half-time.
Portugal were the better side throughout but found Chile stubborn opponents in a match that threatened to boil over on several occasions. Ruben Dias had a header brilliantly saved by Lawrence Vigouroux early on before Leao struck the post, and Cristiano Ronaldo thought he had broken the deadlock nine minutes before the interval only for his composed finish to be ruled out for offside.
The match changed shape dramatically on the stroke of half-time. An initial altercation between Felipe Faundez and Joao Cancelo sparked a needless scuffle involving players from both sides, with Leao and Roman both raising their hands and receiving straight red cards. Both teams were reduced to ten men before the interval had even been reached.
Ronaldo was substituted at the break and it was his replacement who proved the difference. Fernandes, fresh from breaking the Premier League assist record with 21 in the 2025-26 season, wasted no time making his mark on the international stage. In the 58th minute he produced a defence-splitting pass of the highest order to release Goncalo Guedes, who poked the ball into the bottom right corner to give Portugal the lead.
Fernandes then capped a superb individual performance with a goal of his own 15 minutes from time, sweeping a curling finish beyond Vigouroux from the edge of the area to make it 2-0. Chile gave themselves a lifeline in stoppage time when Lucas Cepeda’s excellent left-footed strike flashed past Rui Silva, but Portugal held on to secure a victory that owed much to Fernandes’ quality throughout.
The Manchester United captain finished the evening with team-high totals for chances created, passes in the final third and crosses, and his 29th international goal to boot. The performance will fuel debate about Portugal’s starting line-up when their World Cup campaign begins, with Guedes’ instant impact from the bench adding further intrigue around Ronaldo’s role. The 41-year-old showed moments of his enduring quality before his half-time withdrawal, but the question of whether he starts against DR Congo on 17 June remains very much open.
Portugal have one further warm-up fixture against Nigeria on 11 June before their tournament begins.
