The fascist government, led by the then prime minister Sheikh Hasina, imposed “Hasinomics” on Bangladesh for the past decade and a half, said BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Rizvi made the remarks on Thursday at a discussion in the National Press Club, organised by “90s Ducsu O Sarbadaliya Chhatra Oikya” to mark the 35th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon, a key figure in the 1990 student uprising.
The BNP leader added that although the term “economics” is widely used, the country experienced a different form of economic governance during Sheikh Hasina’s 15-and-a-half-year rule.
Rizvi said the governing principle under that system was that loans need not be repaid. “Under Hasina’s time, loan defaulters could take fresh loans without settling previous ones,” he told the event.
Discussing the economic situation of the past 15 years, Rizvi said Bangladesh is now burdened with Tk6.5 lakh crore in defaulted loans. He said the interim government must take strong measures to rescue the economy from this condition.
“They have taken some initiatives, but while one step is taken, another sector collapses. There is no job creation, unemployment is rising; the government must address these issues,” he pointed out.
The event was presided over by former Ducsu VP and BNP Chairperson’s adviser Amanullah Aman and moderated by Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon.
Speakers included BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, BNP leaders Nazim Uddin Alam, Mustafizur Rahman Babul, Mir Sharafat Ali Sopu, Jagpa leader Khondkar Lutfur Rahman and Asadur Rahman Khan.
