Police have arrested the main accused within 10 hours of a brutal triple murder in Faridpur Sadar Upazila, where a man allegedly hacked three people — including his grandmother and aunt — to death with a spade.
Superintendent of Police Md Nazrul Islam disclosed the information at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Akash Molla’s grandmother Amina Begum (80), his paternal aunt Rahela Begum (55), and neighbour Kabil Hossain (49).
According to police, around 9pm on Monday, Kabil Hossain heard screams coming from Harun Molla’s house in Godadhordangi village. Upon entering the house with locals, he saw Akash Molla repeatedly striking his grandmother and aunt with a spade.
When Kabil Hossain shouted, Akash attacked him as well. All three died at the scene from their severe injuries.
Two others – Riazul Molla (36) and Arjina Begum (45) – were seriously injured in the attack. They were rescued and hospitalised.
Superintendent Nazrul said, “Initially, it is believed that Akash committed the murders due to his family refusing to arrange his marriage and prolonged mental frustration.”
He added that a detailed investigation is underway to determine his mental state and the actual cause of the incident.
The accused has been giving misleading information during interrogation, police said. Locals have also reported that his behaviour had been abnormal for some time.
Akash fled immediately after the incident. In a joint operation by Kotwali Police Station, DB and RAB early Tuesday morning, he was arrested from a banana grove near his home.
The spade used in the murders was also recovered and has been seized as evidence.
Kohinur Begum, wife of deceased Kabil Hossain, filed a murder case at Kotwali Police Station over the incident.
Senior police officials, including Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Md Shamsul Azam and Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Azmir Hossain, were present at the press conference.
