The two scheduled matches of the Sylhet leg of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) were postponed on Tuesday following the death of Bangladesh’s first woman prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia. Although the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed the decision through an official announcement, many spectators who arrived at the stadium were unaware of the postponement.
After learning that the Sylhet Titans vs Chattogram Royals and Dhaka Capitals vs Rangpur Riders matches had been called off, fans grew angry.
From around noon, crowds began gathering in front of the main gate of Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Spectators had travelled from different areas, including Srimangal and Sunamganj. Security personnel denied entry due to the cancellation of both matches, further aggravating the situation as protesters chanted slogans against the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Officials initially attempted to calm the crowd through discussions. However, tensions escalated when a section of the agitated spectators pushed and shook the main gate in an apparent attempt to force entry. Security forces then intervened to restore order and disperse the crowd.
Members of the joint security force, comprising police, Border Guard Bangladesh and the army, chased and scattered the protesters. Many attempted to flee through the adjacent Lakkatura tea garden but were removed from the area by security personnel. Police were also seen using batons in some instances. Three individuals were later detained on suspicion of instigating the unrest.
Earlier, players of Chattogram Royals who had arrived at the stadium for gym and practice sessions were briefly stranded. The team bus also faced difficulties entering the venue. However, under controlled conditions, players including Shariful Islam and Naim Sheikh were able to leave the stadium safely.
