Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has said that ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina is responsible for the death of Khaleda Zia, BNP chairperson and three-time former prime minister.

He made this remark on Tuesday in response to questions from the media in front of the state guesthouse Jamuna after a special meeting of the Advisory Council.

Asif Nazrul said, “The way Khaleda Zia was subjected to mistreatment in prison at different times, perhaps we would not have lost her so soon. I personally believe that behind Begum Zia’s death, the responsibility certainly lies with Sheikh Hasina, the fascist prime minister, and her government.”

He also said, “Khaleda Zia was subjected to unspeakable torture by being sent to jail through a farcical verdict. That the case in which she was convicted was a farcical verdict, that it was a completely staged verdict, has been proven through appeal and review in our highest court.”

In the verdicts of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, it has been repeatedly said the case in which she was sentenced was handled completely wrongfully, with motivated purpose, and with a predetermined intention to sentence her, he added.

The law adviser added that a special meeting of the Advisory Council was held expressing deep sorrow at the death of Khaleda Zia.

The meeting began with a minute of silence while standing, followed by a prayer. A three-day state mourning has been declared, and there will be a one-day public holiday on Wednesday. Condolence books will be opened at all Bangladeshi embassies abroad.
