An explosion echoed across Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, late Thursday night, prompting concern among residents though officials later confirmed there was no immediate cause for alarm.
Taliban spokesperson Zabeehullah Mujahid said in a post on X that loosely translates to, “The sound of an explosion was heard in the city of Kabul. However, no one should worry, it is all well and good, the investigation of the incident is underway, no report of any damage has been given so far,”
Local sources indicated that a Land Cruiser was possibly struck near Abdul Haq Square, an area that was later sealed off by security personnel. Afghan media outlet Tolo News reported that the closure led to severe traffic gridlock in surrounding streets.
According to AFP correspondents in the capital, two loud blasts were heard. The first deafening blast happened around 9:50pm local time (1720 GMT) and was followed by a second explosion a few minutes later.
Following the explosions, security forces were deployed across several areas, conducting vehicle searches and tightening patrols. Mobile phone service was temporarily disrupted in parts of the city.
Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the incident or report any casualties.
