A former union parishad member was hacked to death by a group of assailants in Bogura Sadar upazila on Sunday night.
The victim, Saiful Islam, 50, son of the late Abed Ali Mondal of Ashokola Purba Para in Baghopara, was a two-time elected former member of Noongola Union Parishad.
The attack took place around 10:30pm in the area, according to police and local residents.
Locals said Saiful was returning home on foot from Baghopara Bazar with his grandson when three young men stopped him near his house.
An altercation broke out, and the men attacked Saiful with machetes, leaving him critically injured, they said.
The attackers then left him in a nearby paddy field and fled.
Local residents rescued Saiful and rushed him to the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, but he died on the way.
Ibrahim Ali, officer-in-charge of Bogura Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident.
Police visited the scene after being informed and recovered a pair of shoes and a smartphone from the area, he said.
Saiful’s body has been kept at the hospital morgue.
“Police are working to identify those involved and arrest them. The motive behind the killing is also being investigated,” the OC said.
