A Dhaka court has sentenced Abhiur Rahman Khan, managing director of Apple Global Tel Communications Ltd, and its chairman, Mohi Uddin Mazumdar, to 22 years in prison each under two separate provisions of law in a money laundering case.
The case was filed over the alleged laundering of more than Tk463 crore through incoming and outgoing calls under the guise of service exports.
Judge Abdullah Al Mamun of Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 delivered the verdict on Monday. Mohammad Zahirul Islam, a prosecutor for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), confirmed the matter.
He said the court sentenced each of the two accused to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for money laundering. It also imposed a fine of Tk9,267,492,298, double the amount of Tk4,633,746,149 involved in the offence.
In default of paying the fine, each of them will have to serve an additional year of imprisonment.
Additionally, the court sentenced each defendant to 10 years of imprisonment for criminal breach of trust and fined them Tk10 lakh each. Failure to pay this fine will result in a further year of imprisonment for each.
ACC Prosecutor Zahirul said the court ruled that if the accused failed to pay the fine of Tk9,267,492,298, their movable and immovable properties registered in their names would be confiscated in favour of the state.
