Former Ukrainian parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in the western city of Lviv on Saturday, according to local authorities.
Police confirmed that Parubiy, 54, died at the scene from his injuries. Security forces are searching for the shooter, though the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the killing as a “horrific murder” and pledged a full investigation.
Parubiy, who served as speaker of Ukraine’s parliament between 2016 and 2019, was also a key figure in the country’s pro-European movements, the 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2014 Maidan protests.
