A Dhaka court on Sunday denied the bail application of Ahmed Jobaer, former managing director (MD) of Somoy TV, in a case involving allegations of fraud and forgery.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rakibul Hasan passed the order on Sunday after rejecting the plea moved by the defendant’s lawyer.

Bench Assistant Alamgir Hossain confirmed that this is the second time Jobaer’s bail has been refused this month, with a previous application rejected on 12 July.

Earlier on 18 June, Jobaer was sent to prison after surrendering before the court of Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain. While Jobaer was taken into custody, three other accused individuals – Ahmed Rafid Kader Ribhu, Sheikh Mahmud Yasin, and Sunny Chowdhury – were granted bail on the same day.

The legal proceedings followed issuance of arrest warrants on 17 June against six accused, including Jobaer, after they failed to comply with a court summons.

The case was originally filed on 10 May by Syed Asaduzzaman, who leveled charges of fraud, breach of trust, and document forgery against the six individuals. Upon filing, the court had directed the accused to appear by 17 June, a deadline they failed to meet.

Other individuals facing arrest warrants in connection with the case include Jobaer’s wife, Shamima Sultana Chowdhury, and their daughter, Saraf Nawar Jayeeta.
