Former member of parliament and Bengal Group Chairman Morshed Alam has been arrested in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the court ordered on Monday.
The order was given by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Ibrahim Mia during a hearing, after which the court directed that he be sent to jail.
The case was filed on May 4 by ACC Deputy Director Sheikh Golam Mawla, naming three individuals, including Morshed Alam, as defendants.
The other two accused are Morshed Alam’s son Saiful Alam, managing director of Bengal Concept and Holdings Limited, and his brother Md Jasim Uddin, chairman of Bengal Commercial Bank.
According to the case, Morshed Alam and his brother Md Jasim Uddin allegedly concealed a conflict of interest while purchasing land owned by them for the area office of National Life Insurance Company Ltd.
The land was bought at an irregular price, resulting in embezzlement of Tk 2.86 crore.
Morshed Alam was arrested on the night of April 8 from Gulshan, Dhaka, and has been in custody since then.
