Former member of parliament (MP) for the Gazipur-5 constituency, Akhtaruzzaman, 73, has been sent to jail upon the completion of his remand in connection with an anti-terrorism case filed with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order on Thursday following an application submitted by the investigation officer of the case.
The information was confirmed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Arif Reza of the Prosecution Department.
Earlier, on the night of 5 August, the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Akhtaruzzaman from a residence in Gulshan. The investigation officer, Inspector Md Masudur Rahman of the Tejgaon Zonal Team, produced him before the court on Thursday, seeking a seven-day remand.
However, as the main file of the case was unavailable, the remand hearing could not take place at the time. The court sent the accused to jail and scheduled the hearing for Monday, on which day a three-day remand was granted.
Following the completion of the remand, Inspector Masudur Rahman produced Akhtaruzzaman in court and applied to keep him detained in jail.
Although Morshed Hossain Shahin, the defence counsel for Akhtaruzzaman, filed a petition seeking bail, the hearing on the bail application could not be held as the main case docket remained unavailable. Consequently, the court ordered him to be sent back to prison.
According to the case details, on the morning of 18 June, Nibash Mojumdar, along with 35 to 40 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and Chhatra League, brought out a procession near the Mohakhali Bus Terminal under Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.
During the procession, they reportedly chanted anti-government slogans and detonated cocktails to create public panic, alongside conducting various anti-state activities. The police subsequently filed a case regarding the incident.
