The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Shishir Munna, 28, the Facebook page administrator for former land minister Narayan Chandra Chanda and former member of Parliament Anupam Shahjahan Joy, on charges of fraud, forgery, and embezzlement.
A team from DB Wari Division, supported by Jatrabari police, conducted a raid in Motijheel area around 2:30am on Tuesday to apprehend Munna based on specific intelligence.
According to DB Wari Division sources, Munna and his associates allegedly defrauded a businessman of Tk11.27 lakh by promising him investment opportunities in a Qatari government project. The victim was provided with forged visas and counterfeit air tickets.
When the victim realised he had been deceived and demanded his money back, the accused reportedly stalled and threatened him. Consequently, a case was filed at Jatrabari Police Station regarding fraud and embezzlement.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Munna was responsible for managing the Facebook pages of former minister Narayan Chandra and former MP Joy. His roles included creating election campaign videos and conducting social media and promotional activities.
It is alleged that he exploited the names of influential political figures to lure individuals with the promise of overseas employment, ultimately providing them with fake travel documents. There are also numerous allegations against him regarding the embezzlement of large sums of money under the guise of business investments.
DB sources further revealed that Munna left for Qatar following the events of 5 August 2024, before returning to Bangladesh in April 2025 to resume his fraudulent operations. He also has a pending arrest warrant against him at South Keraniganj Police Station. Legal proceedings against the arrestee are currently underway.
