A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent former ICT Division senior secretary NM Ziaul Alam to jail in a case concerning the murder of Mahbub Hasan Mamun in the capital’s Kafrul area during the July Uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order on Wednesday. The information was confirmed by prosecution lawyer Shamsuddoha Sumon.
The application to show him arrested in the case stated that evidence of the accused’s involvement in the incident was found during the preliminary investigation. It further noted that a remand application might be filed in the future to interrogate him for the sake of a proper investigation.
According to the case statement, 34-year-old Mahbub participated in the protest movement in front of the BRTA office in Mirpur on 19 July 2024. He was shot at 4:30pm and was later declared dead by doctors after being taken to a hospital.
The wife of the deceased filed the murder case at Kafrul Police Station. A total of 161 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, have been named as accused in the case.
