Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Mizanur Rahman Shahin, a former branch manager of a bank under Nawabganj Police Station, from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early Wednesday.
He is a nephew of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal of the previous Awami League government.
Investigating officer of the case, PBI Inspector Md Jamal Uddin, said local youth Rafi Karim was hacked to death in the Shinepukur area of Dohar on the night of 20 May of 2025, over prior enmity.
Following the incident, Rafi’s mother Anowara Khatun filed a case with Dohar Police Station, naming five accused. After the case was filed, Shahin went into hiding and later travelled to Qatar on 7 July last year.
Inspector Jamal Uddin said “Shahin returned from Qatar to attend a visa interview at the German Embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday. He was arrested upon arrival.”
The officer said four other accused—Shahid, Titu, Hukum Ali and Alamin—have already been arrested and remain in jail. Among them, Alamin gave a confessional statement.
According to the statement, during the previous Awami League government, Shahin allegedly seized several ponds in the Shainpukur area, including some owned by Rafi Karim’s family. After 5 August, Rafi regained control of the ponds. Over this dispute, Shahin allegedly planned the killing. Following his instructions, Alamin and others hacked Rafi to death.
After his arrest at the airport, the investigating officer produced Shahin before a Dhaka court, seeking a seven-day remand.
The court, after hearing, granted one day’s remand.
