The European Union (EU) is providing €200,000 in humanitarian funding to support people affected by severe monsoon rains in Chattogram Division. The assistance targets the districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Bandarban, Rangamati, and Khagrachhari.
The funding is expected to benefit 125,000 Rohingya refugees as well as vulnerable host communities in the most severely impacted areas. The aid will support Bangladesh Red Crescent Society in providing emergency shelter materials and rebuilding damaged structures.
The relief operation also includes the repair of essential water and sanitation facilities, the provision of seeds and gardening supplies, and cash assistance for affected families.
Specific measures will be taken to support women, girls, and others facing heightened protection risks through the distribution of dignity items and referral support.
Landslide protection will be restored via cash-for-work initiatives, and communities will receive training to improve preparedness for future floods and landslides.
The crisis began on 5 July, when intense rainfall linked to a monsoon depression triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Chattogram Division. By 13 July, over 1.1 million people were affected, with 30 deaths reported and more than 38,000 people displaced.
The rains caused significant damage to infrastructure, including access routes and over 4,300 shelters and hundreds of water and sanitation facilities within Rohingya refugee camps.
This funding is part of the EU’s overall contribution to Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The EU is a signatory to a €12 million humanitarian delegation agreement with the IFRC to support the DREF, a fund established in 1979 to provide immediate financial support to national societies responding to disasters.
