A European Union delegation, led by Ambassador Michael Miller, has paid a courtesy call on BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman. The meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan on Tuesday evening.

Discussions during the meeting covered the country’s overall situation, atmosphere surrounding the upcoming parliamentary elections, and other issues. Tarique called for EU cooperation in Bangladesh’s development after the election.

Sources say the EU side has assured all possible cooperation.

Following the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said, “We have requested the European Union’s cooperation to ensure the upcoming parliamentary election is held freely, fairly, and impartially.

“We conveyed that the BNP would participate actively in this election.”

Nazrul added, “Especially for this election, the EU has decided to send a large number of observers. If the EU observes the election, the vote’s acceptability will be proven.”

The delegation included Paola Pampaloni, Deputy Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific; Monica Bilaite, Deputy Head for South Asia, Asia and the Pacific; and Legal Advisor Rastislav Spák.

Ismail Zabihullah, member of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council; BNP Joint Secretary General Humayun Kabir; and Mahdi Amin, advisoer to the acting chairman represented BNP among others.
