Spain finally broke the deadlock in the 106th minute of the World Cup final as Ferran Torres put Luis de la Fuente’s side 1-0 ahead against 10-man Argentina at MetLife Stadium.
The breakthrough came almost immediately after extra time began. Nico Williams rose at the back post to nod a deep cross back across goal, and Torres timed his run perfectly before smashing the ball past Emiliano Martinez from close range.
Argentina, reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez’s second yellow card at the end of normal time, now face an uphill battle to defend their world title. Spain, who dominated the match and created the better chances throughout, finally turned their superiority into the decisive goal as Torres edged them closer to a second World Cup crown.
