President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called for an authentic list of freedom fighters and proper recognition of their contributions, saying the state must ensure their honour and dignity while preserving the true history of Bangladesh’s Liberation War.
He made the remarks when a 12-member delegation of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council, led by its Convenor Naim Jahangir, paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban.
President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam briefed reporters after the meeting.
Mirza Fakhrul said the nation remembers the sacrifices and contributions of freedom fighters with profound respect.
He stressed that ensuring their rightful recognition and dignity, along with preparing an accurate list of genuine freedom fighters, was a responsibility of the state.
The President urged everyone to exercise caution and responsibility in documenting and presenting the history of the Liberation War to prevent confusion or ambiguity.
He also emphasised the need to continue the country’s democratic journey by placing national interests above all else.
Mirza Fakhrul called for safeguarding Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and the historical values of the Liberation War.
During the meeting, the delegation raised several demands concerning the welfare, recognition and dignity of freedom fighters.
Its members alleged that individuals who were not genuine freedom fighters had been included in the official list during the previous administration.
They also claimed that the history, ideals and spirit of the Liberation War had been distorted for political purposes.
The delegation informed the President of its plan to organise a peaceful gathering on its own initiative.
Mirza Fakhrul listened to the delegation’s concerns and assured its members that their demands relating to the welfare, honour and dignity of freedom fighters would receive due consideration.
Senior members of the Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Central Command Council and its Dhaka Metropolitan unit were among the delegation.
The President’s military secretary, secretary and press secretary were also present at the meeting.
