England have made one change to their side for the third Ashes Test against Australia, naming Josh Tongue as a like for like replacement for Gus Atkinson in the bowling attack ahead of the match at Adelaide Oval, which begins on Wednesday.
The decision comes with England trailing 2–0 in the series after defeats by eight wickets in both Perth and Brisbane, leaving Ben Stokes’ side needing a win to keep alive their hopes of regaining the Ashes.
Atkinson struggled for impact in the opening two Tests. He went wicketless in the series opener in Perth, though he did contribute 37 runs in the second innings, before returning figures of three for 151 in Brisbane.
Tongue, a right arm fast bowler, has taken 31 wickets in six Tests at an average of 30. His only previous appearance against Australia came at Lord’s in 2023, where he claimed five wickets.
Despite England’s batting unit failing to produce consistent scores across the first two matches, the selectors have opted against any changes to personnel or batting order.
England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Will Jacks, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue.
