The nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday, with new contenders and returning favourites setting the stage for one of television’s biggest nights.
According to the BBC, Apple TV enjoyed a strong showing with new series Pluribus, Margo’s Got Money Troubles and Widow’s Bay. However, HBO Max’s medical drama The Pitt emerged as the most nominated programme of the year with 25 nominations, dominating the drama categories.
Among the biggest talking points, Euphoria missed out on a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series despite earning acting nominations for Zendaya and Colman Domingo.
Meanwhile, Heated Rivalry did not qualify because it is a fully Canadian production, although co-star Connor Storrie secured a guest actor nomination for his appearance on Saturday Night Live.
The comedy categories promise a closely watched contest for Outstanding Lead Actress, with Lisa Kudrow nominated for The Comeback and Jean Smart recognised for Hacks. Smart is seeking her fifth Emmy for the role, while Kudrow hopes to add to the Emmy she won in 1998 for Friends.
Apple TV’s supernatural comedy Widow’s Bay also emerged as one of the strongest performers, collecting 19 nominations. Meanwhile, The Bear continued its awards run with a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series despite mixed reactions to its latest season. Ayo Edebiri and Rob Reiner received acting nominations, although Jeremy Allen White missed out after winning the category twice.
Matthew Rhys capped a successful day by earning nominations for both Widow’s Bay and The Beast in Me. His wife, Keri Russell, also received a nomination for her performance in The Diplomat.
The ceremony will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay and will air live on NBC on 14 September, with streaming available on Peacock.
