Siblings asleep at home, lives lost in Cox’s Bazar landslide

Two children were killed in a landslide in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar after a hill collapsed on their house early Thursday.

The victims were cousins. They were asleep at home in Mohseniya Kata village of ward‑7 under Baraitali union parishad.

Other family members, who were awake at the time, managed with the help of locals to clear the soil and recover the bodies.

The deceased were Rumi Akter, 15, daughter of Mohammad Kajal of Mohseniya Kata village and a tenth‑grade student at Baraitali Dakhil Madrasa; and Mohammad Tawsif, 10, son of Abdul Majid and a fourth‑grade student at the local government primary school.

Baraitali Union Parishad Chairman Md Salequzzaman said, “On one side there is devastating flooding, and on the other, landslides have spread panic among villagers. For the last two days, villages have been inundated. In this situation, the deaths of two children in a landslide are deeply tragic.”
