Devotees of Mirzakhil Darbar Sharif in Satkania, along with followers in different parts of the country, celebrated Eid-ul-Azha on Wednesday in line with Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries.
The celebrations included Eid congregations and the ritual sacrifice of animals in several areas of South Chattogram and beyond.
Representatives of the Darbar Sharif said followers of the Hanafi school of thought observe Eid-ul-Adha the day after the Hajj is performed in Saudi Arabia. They added that the tradition of observing Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid-ul-Adha and other religious occasions based on moon sightings anywhere in the world has continued for nearly 200 years.
Mohammad Masudur Rahman, spokesperson for Mirzakhil Darbar Sharif, told the TIMES of Bangladesh that followers of the Darbar had long observed Eid-ul-Adha the day after Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
“This decision is taken after confirming the moon sighting and Hajj information,” he said.
The main Eid Jamaat was held at the Khanka ground of Mirzakhil Darbar Sharif in Satkania, where Muhammad Maksudur Rahman led the prayers. Special prayers and munajat were offered after the congregation, followed by the sacrifice of animals.
In Anwara upazila, another Eid congregation was held at 8:30am on the premises of Hazrat Latif Shah (Pr.) Khalifa Shah (Rah.) Dargah in Tailardwip village.
Nur Muhammad, a participant in the congregation, said Eid prayers were held in the morning before devotees performed Qurbani. Two additional congregations were also organised in Borumchhara village.
The festival was celebrated in several areas of Chattogram district, including Eochia, Gatiadenga, Alinagar, Madarsha, Khagaria, Moishamura, Purangarh, Bajalia, Moneyabad, Charoti, Suipura and Haluaghona in Satkania; Kanchannagar, Harala, Bainjuri, Dohazari and Jamirjuri in Chandanaish; Kalipur and Chambal in Banshkhali; Borumchhara and Tailardwip in Anwara; Putibila, Kalauzan and Chunti in Lohagara; and Baria-Dhala and Salimpura in Sitakunda.
Outside Chattogram, devotees in different upazilas of Feni, Rangamati, Cumilla, Dhaka, Munshiganj, Kishoreganj, Narsingdi, Chandpur, Sylhet, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Noakhali, Barishal, Patuakhali, Chuadanga, Bhola and Bandarban also celebrated Eid-ul-Azha on Wednesday following the same tradition.
