The government has decided to keep English medium schools closed until Eid-ul-Fitr. The decision was taken for several reasons, including reducing public suffering during the period.
The decision was made at a meeting on Sunday chaired by Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan, with representatives of English medium schools in attendance.
Schools will remain closed from Monday (9 March) until 26 March. After excluding the Friday–Saturday weekends, classes will resume on 29 March. This means English medium schools will have a 20-day holiday.
Later, a notice signed by Shirin Akhter, senior assistant secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division was issued.
The notice stated that, considering public inconvenience during Ramadan in Dhaka and other cities, as well as the global situation, all schools following foreign curricula will remain closed from Monday until the government-declared Eid holiday period.
However, any mandatory examinations scheduled earlier will be held as planned.
At the same time, all coaching centres both Bangla and English medium will also remain closed during this period.
Earlier, on 19 February, the government announced holidays for Bangla medium primary and secondary schools. After Eid and other holidays, those schools are also scheduled to reopen on 29 March.
