BNP lawmaker ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milan, newly elected from Chandpur-1, has been appointed as the Minister for Education in the cabinet led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
On Tuesday, he took his oath as the minister for Primary and Mass Education.
Milan earlier served as state minister for education from 2001 to 2006 under the BNP government led by Khaleda Zia. He was elected from the same Chandpur-1 constituency in 1996 and 2001 before winning again in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
During his previous tenure, he gained prominence for strict measures against cheating in public examinations, particularly during Secondary School Certificate and Higher Secondary Certificate exams.
Following his latest electoral victory, social media users speculated about his return to the education ministry, with many urging students to focus on their studies.
Milan began his political career with Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Dhaka University and later served as the BNP’s International Affairs Secretary.
He is currently a member of the party’s National Executive Committee.
Milan holds a BSc in Chemistry from Dhaka University, an MBA from the New York Institute of Technology in the United States, and a PhD in Political Science from the International Islamic University Malaysia.
Before entering full-time politics, he worked as an assistant lecturer at Brooklyn College and Borough of Manhattan Community College in the United States. Born on 26 March 1957 in Kachua, Chandpur, Milan is set to oversee the country’s education sector at a pivotal time.
