Egg prices in Chattogram have remained high for two consecutive weeks, with a dozen eggs currently retailing at Tk140, a sharp rise from the recent price of Tk110.
This sudden spike has caused significant distress for general consumers. Traders have attributed the price hike to market manipulation and the increasing cost of poultry feed.
In contrast, the poultry market has seen a slight reprieve. The price of broiler chicken has decreased by approximately Tk10 per kg over the past week, with it now selling between Tk160 and Tk170.
However, stability has yet to fully return to the vegetable market. Market observations show that tomatoes, which were sold at Tk70 per kg last week, are now available for Tk60. Other vegetable prices include cucumbers at Tk60, green chillies at Tk50, and coriander leaves at Tk 60 per kg.
Cauliflowers are priced between Tk45 and Tk50, cabbage at Tk30, lady’s finger at Tk 120, long beans at Tk100, and carrots at Tk40 per kg. Gourds are selling for Tk40, sweet pumpkins between Tk40 and Tk50, and radishes at Tk30 per kg.
Meanwhile, the prices of marine and farmed fish have remained largely unchanged.
Loitta fish is being sold at Tk200, Koral between Tk700 and Tk900, Ayre from Tk600 to Tk750, and prawns between Tk750 and Tk1,200 per kg.
Additionally, Rui-Katla is priced between Tk350 and Tk450, Pabda from Tk400 to Tk600, Shing from Tk400 to Tk500, Tengra between Tk600 and Tk700, and Puti fish at Tk200 to Tk250 per kg.
