The Editors’ Council elected a new executive committee for the 2025-2027 term during its Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at The Daily Star Centre in the capital on Thursday.
The meeting, presided over by the outgoing President Mahfuz Anam, editor and publisher of The Daily Star, saw the participation of editors from leading national dailies, both in person and online. As per the council’s constitution, the newly formed committee will serve for the next two years.
Editor of New Age, Nurul Kabir, was elected president, while Tasmima Hossain, editor of The Daily Ittefaq, was chosen as vice-president. Dewan Hanif Mahmud, Editor of Bonikbarta, was appointed general secretary, and Rusho Mahmud, editor of Suprobhat Bangladesh, as assistant general secretary.
The five-member executive committee includes Mahfuz Anam of The Daily Star, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury of The Daily Manab Zamin, Matiur Rahman of Prothom Alo, Mozammel Haque of The Daily Karatoa, and AMM Bahauddin of Daily Inqilab.
The newly elected President, Nurul Kabir, pledged to lead the council with greater transparency and activism. He committed to upholding “fair, reliable, and progressive journalism” during his term.
In his concluding address, outgoing president Mahfuz Anam emphasised the council’s resolve to work for “fair, safe, and responsible journalism.” He hoped editors would continue to play a pioneering role in society and take necessary steps to protect media freedom.
Attending the meeting as newly appointed members were Shahed Mohammad Ali, editor, The Daily Samakal; Inam Ahmed, editor, The Business Standard; Hasan Hafiz, editor, Kaler Kantho; Abu Taher, editor, Bangladesh Pratidin; and Md Rezaul Karim (Lotus), editor, The Daily Sun.
