Eastern Bank PLC and icddr,b have renewed their partnership for the third consecutive year, reaffirming a shared commitment to improving public health and environmental sustainability in Bangladesh.
The bank said in a press release that a cheque handover ceremony under the existing memorandum of understanding was held on 22 January at the head office of Eastern Bank PLC in Dhaka.
Eastern Bank Additional Managing Director Ahmed Shaheen handed over project funding cheques to icddr,b Head of Biosafety Unit Asadulghani for Phase III of the Biohazardous Waste Management programme and to icddr,b Head of Matlab Health Research Centre Md Al Fazal Khan to support the organisation’s Matlab Hospital.
Under Phase III of the Best Practices in Sustainable Solid Biohazardous Waste Management initiative, Eastern Bank will continue funding the programme in 2026, with a focus on strengthening institutional capacity, improving operational systems and enhancing national coordination to ensure safe and sustainable management of biohazardous waste across healthcare facilities.
The new phase will also support knowledge and technology transfer and assist government health facilities in implementing updated national guidelines on biohazardous waste management, the release said.
Alongside the environmental initiative, Eastern Bank is extending corporate social responsibility support to icddr,b’s Matlab Hospital, a globally recognised centre for public health research and healthcare services that provides free treatment to thousands of patients each year and plays a key role in maternal, child and diarrhoeal care.
Senior officials from both organisations attended the event, including icddr,b Head of Fund Development Armana Ahmed, Manager of Donor Relations Naser Azad and Coordinator of Development Laila Farzana.
From Eastern Bank, Company Secretary Md Abdullah Al Mamun and Head of Business Information Systems Md Maskur Reza FCA were present, along with other officials from both sides.
