Disney has released a new trailer for its live-action adaptation of ‘Moana’, giving fans a first look at the beloved characters in a reimagined format.
Catherine Lagaʻaia stars as Moana, the determined wayfinder, while Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the trickster demigod Maui.
The trailer features iconic scenes from the original animated film, including Moana’s encounters with Maui, the shiny-obsessed crab Tamatoa and the fiery lava creature Te Kā, along with songs such as ‘I Am Moana’ (Song of the Ancestors). Dwayne appears with a full head of flowing hair, staying true to his character’s animated look.
The cast also includes John Tui as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams as her mother, Sina; and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
Directed by Thomas Kail, known for ‘Hamilton’, the film is produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth and Auliʻi Cravalho, the original voice of Moana, serve as executive producers.
The soundtrack features original songs by Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi and Mark Mancina, with Mancina composing the score.
The live-action Moana is set to hit cinemas on July 10.
