Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) Vice President Abu Sadik Kayem has accused a political party of claiming power before the national elections, warning that anyone attempting to seize polling centres or rig votes would face consequences more severe than under Sheikh Hasina’s government.
Kayem made the remarks during a public rally organised by Jhikargacha Upazila unit Jamaat-e-Islami on Friday afternoon at the BM Secondary School grounds in Jhikargacha, Jashore.
Addressing the gathering, Kayem stressed that the country’s youth have long been deprived of their voting rights and called for active participation to ensure fair elections. “On election day, everyone must work together to guard polling centres,” he said.
He criticised politicians who treat politics as a business, adding, “Once in power, they ignore the people. I have seen how some even set new benchmarks for corruption in Bangladesh. We, however, aim to establish a new political model- one that serves the poor, promotes equality, ensures freedom, and upholds Islamic principles.”
Sadik Kayem also raised concerns about the fragility of Bangladesh’s healthcare system, urging reforms to free hospitals from syndicate control.
Reflecting on the student-led July movement, he said, “Our struggle continues until justice is restored. Through the July Revolution, the youth have risen, yet even after 54 years of independence, the people of Bangladesh are not fully free. The politics of killers like Hasina will no longer dominate. Only those committed to the nation’s welfare should engage in politics.”
The rally was presided over by Md Ismail Hossain, president of Jashore District West, with Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Dr Mosleh Uddin Farid for Jashore-2 (Chaugachha-Jhikargacha) attending as chief guest.
Special guests included Ducsu Sports Secretary Md Arman Hossain, and Jamaat candidates Abdul Kader (Jashore-3, Sadar) and Azizur Rahman (Jashore-1, Sharsha). The event was hosted by Jhikargacha Upazila Jamaat Ameer Md Abdul Alim.
