Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has called for the temporary suspension of all Dhaka University (DU)-related Facebook pages and groups ahead of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election on September 9.
The demand was made by DU Chhatra Dal general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon at a press conference on Saturday, UNB reports.
Shipon said the measure is needed to ensure a level playing field, alleging that the platforms are being exploited to harass activists, spread misinformation, and carry out cyberbullying campaigns against rivals.
He further claimed that JCD leaders and activists are being subjected to coordinated online attacks through malicious tagging and fabricated posts aimed at creating unrest.
Earlier, JCD leaders met Chief Returning Officer Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin and urged him to take immediate action to prevent the misuse of social media during the polls.
A total of 471 candidates are contesting 28 positions in DUCSU, with nearly 40,000 students eligible to vote. Polling will be held from 8am to 4pm.
