A student of Dhaka University has threatened the female student who filed a writ petition challenging the candidacy of SM Farhad, the GS candidate of the ‘United Students Alliance’ panel supported by Chhatra Shibir in the Ducsu election, with ‘gang rape’.
On Monday, a student named Ali Hossain posted on Facebook threatening her with ‘gang rape’. The person who made the threat is a residential student of Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall from the 2020-21 academic year of the university’s Sociology department.
Since Ali Hossain’s post, leaders of various active student organisations on the university campus, general students, and many others have protested through Facebook statuses. SM Farhad, the GS candidate of Shibir, has also demanded action against Ali Hossain.
The female student who filed the writ and is contesting for the post of Secretary of Liberation War and Democratic Movement from the ‘Invincible 71-Indomitable 24’ panel in Ducsu explained her position, stating that SM Farhad’s stance is against the Liberation War of Bangladesh, that Farhad was actively involved with the banned Chhatra League, and that no proof of his resignation has been found. Therefore, Farhad’s activities are ‘in conflict’ with the constitution of Ducsu.
In response to this, the threat-maker, Ali Hossain, wrote in a Facebook post, ‘Instead of protesting against the High Court now, she should first be subjected to a gang rape march.’
Protesting strongly against this statement, Ducsu VP candidate Abdul Kader wrote in a Facebook post, ‘The female candidate who filed the writ is not being dealt with legally and politically; instead, she is being threatened with gang rape. Such heinous acts will not be allowed to continue at Dhaka University.’
Associate Professor Samina Luthfa of the university’s Sociology department has demanded action against Ali Hossain for his statement. In a Facebook post, she said, ‘Ali Hossain has no right to threaten her with gang rape for filing a writ. Action should be taken against him. But that too must be through due process.”
Later at night, he submitted a written application to the proctor demanding legal and administrative action against Ali Hossain.
No statement from Ali Hossain on this matter could be obtained.
