Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) staged a large rally on campus on Wednesday, demanding a halt to the activities of the “banned” Chhatra League and the removal of what they described as “fascist forces” from the university.
The students marched along various roads before gathering in front of the Ducsu building, where organisers announced plans for a protest procession.
Participants chanted slogans against the Chhatra League. Speakers at the rally declared that their movement would continue until the banned and expelled Chhatra League was completely eliminated and “fascist rule” ended.
They urged all university students to stay united and raise their voices against injustice and repression.
During the rally, Azizur Rahman, vice president of Surya Sen Hall Student Council, called for renaming the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, with one protester proposing it be changed to “National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.”
The programme was officially announced by Ducsu Vice President Sadik Kayem. Leaders from the central Ducsu council and various hall councils attended the rally.
The demonstration coincided with the “Dhaka Lockdown” programme announced by the Awami League for 13 November .
Meanwhile, separate incidents of crude bomb explosions were reported near the Dhaka University Teachers-Student Centre (TSC), with one blast occurring near tea stalls. DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the incident to TIMES of Bangladesh, saying the explosives may have been thrown from inside Suhrawardy Udyan. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and taking measures to address the situation.
University students have expressed concern over the incident near the TSC. Rayhan Ahmed, a student of the Biochemistry Department, said, “I was sitting at a tea stall at the TSC, when I heard a loud noise. When I turned around, I saw someone speeding away on a motorcycle.”
Additionally, a crude bomb detonated near the entrance of Shahjalal International Airport, injuring an Ansar personnel. This growing pattern of unrest has raised concerns over campus and citywide safety in Dhaka.
