Sheikh Shovon, the joint general secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) Dhaka University unit, has resigned from his position, stating that it is no longer possible for him to continue his journey with BNP.
He announced his resignation through a social media post on Thursday, in which he also criticised the government. In the post, Shovon stated that the nation is currently standing at a moment of deep crisis.
Shovon claimed that the spirit and commitments of 5 August – which he described as being achieved through 21 days of counter-resistance by the unified forces of students, the public, and soldiers – are now being ignored and trampled upon.
He further noted that the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs have yet to receive their rightful dignity, overshadowed by “the dark shadows of betrayal” and blind competition for personal and group interests.
Shovon mentioned that they did not bow down during those difficult times, and it was their courage and trust in Allah that saved the motherland from a “bloody disaster.” However, he lamented that the dream of building a modern, justice-based, and humane state remains an unfulfilled and “cruel reality.”
In his announcement, Shovon declared the withdrawal of his support for what he termed a “weak government and party (BNP)” that has resorted to “hypocrisy” in tackling the ongoing national disaster.
Reflecting on his decade-long struggle and sacrifice, he stated that his efforts were not for personal gain but for the satisfaction of Allah, the protection of the people’s self-respect, and a moral obligation toward the “oppressed mother of the country,” the late Khaleda Zia.
He concluded that as a man of principle, it is no longer possible for him to remain aligned with the party’s current policies and activities.
Shovon emphasised that “the state is supreme” and the party is merely one of its components. He asserted that there can be no compromise on questions of state interest, justice, and sovereignty.
He added that if a struggle becomes inevitable again for the nation’s independence and dignity, he remains prepared for the highest sacrifice, stating that “martyrdom will be our final commitment.” He ended his post with the salutation, “Long live Bangladesh.”
